HAKA Dance Done Right
MASTER CLASS
HAKA posture dance was originally performed by ancient Māori warriors in New Zealand, while preparing for the battlefield, demonstrating their strength and power in order to intimidate the enemy. Emotional and audacious, HAKA is in fact a sign of deep respect, and a fierce display of a tribe’s pride, strength and unity.
Today, HAKA is widely performed for various reasons: welcoming distinguished guests, acknowledging great achievements, on occasions such as sports matches, weddings and even funerals. HAKA is also very common at universities during commencement days, serving to highlight the importance of the occasion and develop a stronger sense of community.
